Best Known Digestifs of the World

There are varieties of digestifs on the world today but which is the best digestif drink when everybody says “this is the best digestif” and “we have the best digestif recipe”?

Of the sprouting variety of digestif drinks in beverages markets and bars, which one has the best digestif recipe to pacify your stomach’s health just by drinking only one digestif glass of wine or whisky?

Here I gave you a shot of bubbling pour of list of most-drink digestifs in the world on your digestif glass. Cheers!

  1. French Digetifs. The famous type of digestifs almost every drinker drinks from Cognac digestif to Calvados brandy in the world today.

a.       Cognac Digestif – this French digestif is a type of brandy made from three named types of grapes, namely, Colombard grapes, Ugni Blanc grapes,and Folle Blanche grapes. The wine produced from these grapes is then heat up by distillation twice to produce the cognac brandy. Then, this wine is locked up in an oak barrel for about 2 and one half years or more in accordance to the taste of the wine maker. Cognac brandy or cognac digestif are processed and made from the land of Cognac at the department of Charente, France.

The final product is then diluted to a percentage of alcohol and pure distilled water and some color flavorings that will not affect the original taste of it.

Cognac has some grades of ages where one could choose to drink in accordance to BNIC or Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac specifications. These grades are the famous labels on the Cognac bottle you buy on the market, namely VS or Very Special (this label means the cognac you bought is aged at two years),VSOP or Very Special  Old Pale (if you see this label on a cognac bottle, this means it has been aged at least 4 years),XO or Extra Old (which is at least six years aged in an oak barrel or more),Napoleon, Extra, Vieux, Vieille Réserve, and Hors d'âge.

Cognac can be mixed with other flavors to produce cocktail drinks or desirable digestif cocktail drinks. There are many do-it-yourself cognac cocktail recipes in the net, as well as to bars and clubs of course, just ask the bar tenders.

If you are buying for a cognac brandy, here are some brands I can suggest you could buy: Hennessy, Camus, Martell, Courvoisier, Remy Martin, Hine, Otard, Grand Mariner, Landy Cornac, and Pierre Ferrand.

 

b.      Calvados digestif - it is a French apple brandy made of course from apple juice that has been fermented from the land of Normandy France. The apples are then picked beginning in September up to December and ripened and dried at wooden boxes until the month of January, and then the ripened and dried apples are then mash into apple cider for another several months and let it be fermented naturally. Then the fermented apple juice is distilled either once or twice and then aged at oak barrels.

Contrary to common practice of drinking a digestif drink after a meal, Calvados digestif are being taken or drink in midways of one’s meal. And this is a common tradition to a local citizen of Normandy, for this is the best way to enjoy or drink a Calvados brandy.

However, Calvados digestif can also be drink with other ingredients put on it or rather I say it can be transform into a digestif cocktail drinks. Moreover, Calvados is also added at a Normandy’s pork and mussel dishes as a partner for creams added to these kinds of dishes.

c.       Armagnac digestif - this kind of digestif brandy is made from Armagnac France and have been called in other callings as Eau de Vie and strongly compared to Cognac because both are grape-based brandy and moreover, Armagnac is much cheaper and have variety of therapeutic claims, like it says it cures hepatitis, gouts, cankers ,and others.

Just like to Cognac, the fermented grape juices is being distilled twice and aged at oak barrels for years.

d.      Genepi or Genepy digestif - unlike to a fruit-based brandy or fruit-based digestif drink, Genepy digestif are made from the blends of herbs namely Alpine herbs, basically the flowers of these plants. The herbs are then macerated for 40 days with alcohol and sugar. Actually, this digestif drink is the favorite after-meal drink of those who are in Savoy France.

e.      Cremes  digestif  or Sweet Creams -  Cremes are fruit brandies that have higher degree of sweetness and thicker consistencies. These very sweet fruit-based digestifs are being flavored or added to some drinks and even to ice creams.

Cointreau Liqueur

 

f.        Cointreau - Cointreau is a blend of bitter orange liquer made at Angers France. It is being mixed to other drinks to form cocktails.
